Presenters
are primarily adult professionals representing dozens of organizations.
Most have an outreach component to their jobs and are available
to speak
on a variety of topics to all grade levels. We also promote and
utilize the talents of high school students as presenters and volunteers.
Activities
are included in the Festival Program only if they address at least
one of the Six Topic Areas and they are hands-on!
Presenters
develop pre– and post– festival survey questions to
ensure that students absorb critical activity information.
All
activities address multiple New Mexico Science Standards for the
fourth grade. They also address many science standards for the 3rd
and 5th grades.

The
Festival is held over two days and consists of a program of activities.
In the Middle Rio Grande program, 23 activities are presented each
day. In the Santa Fe program, 12 activities are presented each day.
All
activities are 25 minutes in length and each class attends five
activities. The goal is for each class to attend one activity in
each topic area.
Activities
cover one or more of these six topic areas:
-
Web of life
- General
hydrology and the water cycle
- Watershed
- Water
quality
- Water
conservation
- Water
and our society/culture
Topic
areas are tied to the questions students are asked during the Classroom
Visits, as part of the evaluation process.

How does the river get polluted and what can you do about
it? Students explore the sources of water pollution and discover
solutions using a model of the watershed. |
